Nigel Lonwijk

Nigel Lonwijk joined Wolves’ academy from PSV in January 2020 and progressed through the youth system quickly during his first 18 months in gold and black.

After a loan spell back in Netherlands during the 2021/22 season with Fortuna Sittard, Lonwijk has become well-versed with the third tier of English football, spending time with Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers.

Lonwijk was a League One title winner with Argyle in the 2022/23 season, playing 41 times on his way to becoming a champion, while the defender signed for Grasshopper Club Zurich at the start of last season but after a brief spell and injury, returned to Wolves before heading back into League One with Wycombe.

He went on to play 11 times for the Chairboys during the second half of the campaign, scoring two goals – his stunning acrobatic effort at Reading winning their Goal of the Season award. Lonwijk also played the full 90 minutes as Wycombe were beaten finalists against Peterborough United in the 2023/24 Bristol Street Motors Trophy final at Wembley.

After spending summer 2024 with Gary O’Neil’s first-team, the Dutch centre back headed back to League One for the 2024/25 campaign, joining up with Michael Duff’s Huddersfield Town on a season-long loan.

Nigel Lonwijk was born in the Netherlands to a Surinamese father and Dutch mother and has chosen to represent the country of his birth at international level.

The defender has made just one appearance for his country, having been called up by Netherlands under-16s for a friendly against Portugal in October 2018.

Playing against future Wolves teammate Fabio Silva, Lonwijk received a red card just before the break with Silva – who was dismissed himself in the second half – scoring from the resulting penalty, with the game eventually ending 1-1.
