McNamara | 'We scored some really good goals'

Dan McNamara hailed his side’s excellent display which saw Wolves Women dominantly overcome Hull City Ladies.

Wolves beat their Yorkshire opponents 5-0 at the SEAH Stadium on Sunday afternoon, allowing McNamara to praise his side following the full-time whistle.

Goals from Amber Hughes, Charlotte Greengrass, Racheal Quigley and Louanne Worsey were enough to seal the three points.

McNamara touched on the performance, Hughes’ red-hot form, the importance of an early goal, preparing for a long trip to Middlesbrough next week, before finally explaining both Milly Robertson and Katie Johnson’s injuries.

On the performance

“I thought we were excellent in parts today. We know Hull, they'll come here, work hard for each other and graft, and you have to find ways to take them apart, and I thought we did that really well.

“We scored some really good goals, obviously Amber gets another brace which is fantastic, I was really pleased with the way in which those goals came. Another assist for Casey Howe as well, so all together it was a great afternoon.”

On Amber Hughes continuing to impress

“She’s phenomenal, outstanding. I think we have to look past the goals as well, it's not just the goals she brings. She sets the tempo, she's intense with her movements, she's brilliant without the ball. She's just a fantastic person.

“Her goal tally speaks for itself, and I still maintain my quote that she is one of the best strikers in this league. She is outstanding in everything she brings to this club, and she really sets the tempo for the game. Even at the last minute there she's pushing and she's trying to find ways in which she can score again.

“Chasing lost causes, making something out of nothing, so outstanding from her. But I thought the whole group was excellent today, with some really good performances. I thought Milly Robertson was great until she got injured and went off.

“Casey as well, we got a little insight from what we can expect from her for the rest of the season. Great to see Tammi George back on the pitch, Charlotte, and Georgia Marshall. It's a tough task to mark Hope Knight, but I thought she did outstanding today to keep her quiet. Overall, a great Sunday and we move on to next week.”

On the early goal

“These teams come and they want to stay in the game and build momentum, so I think if you can score early you put a dent in that momentum and the plan in which they put together. So it was great to get the early goal, we enjoyed it on the sideline, it was something we went through in training, so it was brilliant for it to come off.

“Alex Brooks spots the run, it’s effective and it puts us in a great position and then from there on in we can settle down and start to play our football.

“I thought we really did play well today in moments, as I said, there were some really good movements, the structure we were asking them to get into was outstanding, so really pleased overall and now we turn our attention to Middlesbrough.”

On goal difference being important

“Absolutely it is. Although us staff don't look at the league table at the minute, we know we have eight games left to play so we’re looking at Middlesbrough next week.”

On preparing for the long trip to Middlesbrough

“It suits some of them, it doesn't suit others, but we've got to find ways to make sure they're prepared to deliver the best they can next weekend, Middlesbrough will be a really tough test away from home.

“At Stockton Town they haven't been beaten much there, it's an astroturf up there and I know Joe will have them in a great place.

“We have to do our homework this week to make sure we're in a great place to go up there and put a game plan together because if we want to go and achieve what we want this year, you have to go on long journeys and win, so hopefully we can go and do that next week.”

On Milly Robertson and Katie Johnson’s injuries

“I was a little bit annoyed on the sideline, as a little bit of communication could have stopped that from happening, but Katie has got a big bump on her head, so at half time we just took a bit of a precautionary substitute.

“Milly is a little bit different, she's gone over on her ankle which is tough, because I know she’s really been crying out for that start, but I don’t think it’s anything new, I think it was something from training, so hopefully this week she'll be off the pitch and maybe back for next week.”
