Armstrong | 'I’m loving it and love the fans here'

Adam Armstrong has praised the Wolves fans for the backing they have given him and the team since his arrival in February, with their support making him feel at home at Molineux.

The striker has been a key part of Rob Edwards’ side following his move from Southampton two months ago and admits he has been surprised by the level of support the team continues to receive despite their perilous position in the Premier League table.

As the experienced forward approaches his 100th Premier League appearance with Wolves entering their final six games of the campaign, Armstrong hopes the team can continue to fight and take positive momentum into next season, whatever the outcome may be.

On the support of the Wolves fans

“The fans have been excellent with me, really, really good. When you see the fans in the street or if I’m shopping, they always want to speak to you and they’ve been spot on. I feel like the games that I’ve had recently, I’ve played well, but they’ve been amazing with me and I’m enjoying it, I’m loving it, and love the fans here and love everyone around here.

“They’ve really helped me and my family settle in really well. It feels like a massive family club and their support is what helps to get the best out of the players. We’re the same, we want to try and win every football match, everyone wants to win every game, and when you win, it obviously makes it a lot easier, but people are so down to earth around here.

“During these last six games, we obviously just need the fans to stick with us. Personally, I’ve seen myself how good the fans have been considering the league position we’re in, so I can’t imagine what it’s like when you’re winning every week. It’d be such an electric atmosphere.

“The fans have been brilliant, always supporting us because we’re trying to do our best on the pitch, so I hope they can see that and stick with us, because we really appreciate them.”

On feeling at home in Old Gold

“Moving clubs is never easy, especially when you’ve got family, but my wife and kids are all perfect and they’ve handled it great. But this is part of the job.

“I moved away quite a lot when I went on loan when I was younger, and you kind of just get used to it. I was at Southampton for a long period of time, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but when the chance to come to Wolves came about, it was a no-brainer for myself and I’m buzzing to be here.”

On approaching his 100th Premier League appearance

“I actually got reminded about that a couple of weeks ago, that I was so close, I didn’t really know, but it’s a dream to play just one game in this league, so to get 100 is just incredible. For me and my family, we’ve worked so hard to get here.

“I thought the Premier League was over for me as I was in the Championship doing well, and as you get older, you start to think about your what’s next for you. At Southampton, we started off a bit slow, so I didn’t know if they were going to get promoted or not, so when Wolves come about to play back in the Premier League, it’s every kid’s dream, and no matter how long that’ll be for, it was something I couldn’t turn down.

“It was a massive opportunity to work with a gaffer here and his staff and see a different variety of players – there’s a few foreign boys, a few English, and everyone gets on so well. I’m amazed that the morale was as good as it is for being so far down the bottom the league, but we have to take every game as it comes and just try and keep enjoying our football.”

On giving his all for the club

“Every time I’ve played in the Premier League, I’ve tried to play my best and work hard for the team. Obviously, I’ve had different circumstances, different managers, and things have been out of my control, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being here and every time I step foot on the pitch in the Premier League, it’s every kid’s dream.

“I try and take this attitude with me and just do the best I can. Luckily enough, I’ve come in here, I feel like I’ve done well, and to get my first goal against Brentford was amazing, so hopefully I can kick on.”

On fighting until the end

“I can’t really speak too much on things that happened before I was here, but I’ve always said when I first came into this team that it’s a team that shouldn’t be bottom of the league, in my opinion. You see it in training every day, the performance have picked up, the results are picked up and you can only look ahead, and that’s what we’re trying to do.

“We’ll take every game as it comes and the standards that we drive is to try and be the best that we can be, and that’s what we’re trying to do. For the next six games, we’ve just got to keep going as well as we can.

“Performances get people talking, and I think that’s something that we’ve been doing. It’s not just about drawing a game or winning a game, it’s actual performances of individuals and the team. We have to take the next six games like cup finals and whatever happens, we’ll take it from there.”
