Rodrigo Gomes says Friday’s win over Aston Villa saw the players do their jobs on the pitch and the fans respond in the stands, creating a fitting atmosphere for a memorable win.
After a tough season for the Molineux faithful, the 2-0 victory felt well deserved for all involved with the Old Gold and was wrapped up late on by Gomes in front of the South Bank.
Gomes led the celebrations in the Wolverhampton rain, as Wolves chalked up a win over their neighbours under the lights, on a night when everything fell into place for the Old Gold.
On a big win under the lights
“It was an amazing win, in a derby. I think we did a very good game, especially second half, and I think we deserved the win. The lads worked so hard to achieve this win and we deserved it.
“We tried to defend because they have a very good team, with very good players, which is why they’re near the top of the table. We tried to defend their actions and to score ours. Thankfully we scored two goals and, of course, it’s a very good win so we need to enjoy it.”
On his crucial strike
“When I saw the ball there, I just wanted to score. It was a good goal on the transition. I was very tired because I came on and was running a lot, but luckily I scored the goal and I was very, very happy. It finished the game, a derby at home with our fans, it was amazing.
“The environment was very, very good today, the fans did a very good job outside, and I think we did a very good job inside the pitch. We were very happy to give this win to the fans. Everyone knows this season has been tough, but the fans are always with us, every game at home and away. It was very good to give a gift for them.”

On belief growing
“We are playing much better. I think, even at Crystal Palace, we did a good game. We missed a penalty and had the red card, but 11 against 11 we were playing very well and had our chances. Against Arsenal we did a good second half and this game, a win. We are in a good moment, and we need to keep the momentum, keep the work and try to win as many games as possible.”
On building on it
“It was similar to the Arsenal game. Our second half was much better, and we were growing minute after minute. I think we could feel that the goal was close, and we scored and then at the end. I’m very, very happy. The night was perfect. I like to play in the rain, it was good, and winning like this was perfect.
“We need to keep the momentum, we need to keep working. Of course, here with our fans at home, we have a chance to win the game. We need to focus now on the things that we need to improve, the things that we need to keep working on, and prepare for the Liverpool game.”
