Report | Wolves 2-2 Arsenal

Wolves 2 (H Bueno 61, Edozie 90+4) Arsenal 2 (Saka 5, Hincapie 56)

Tom Edozie struck an injury time equaliser on his senior debut, as Wolves came from two goals down to stun Arsenal at Molineux and blow the Premier League title race wide open.

The Gunners led 2-0 on the hour mark thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie, but a stunning strike from Hugo Bueno – his first in the Premier League – flipped the momentum the Old Gold’s way.

Then, in the fourth minute of injury time, a mix up in the Arsenal defence allowed Edozie to pounce and fire in an improbable equaliser between Riccardo Calafiori and the post to mark a dream debut for the youngster, make it three games unbeaten for Rob Edwards’ side and twist the title race once more.

If the head coach’s plan was to keep it tight for as long as possible, like at the Emirates in December, he’ll have been frustrated by the speed and simplicity of Arsenal’s opener. After just five minutes, the Gunners worked it left and Declan Rice picked out the run of Saka, who’d lost Mateus Mane with his movement, and he stooped to nod between the legs of Jose Sa.

The early momentum suited Arsenal, who saw Rice fire wide from 20 yard out and Noni Madueke force a parried save out of Sa, who did enough to stop Gabriel Martinelli converting the rebound.

Madueke then headed wide from a Martinelli cross, with frustration growing amongst home supporters. While Wolves were unable to create many chances during the remainder of the half, they did at least up their bite as the snow came down at Molineux.

It took until the first minute of added time for Wolves to register their first shot. Yerson Mosquera’s cleared throw was recycled by Jackson Tchatchoua, allowing Santiago Bueno to lay off to Andre, and the Brazilian’s low strike was clean, but whistled just past the post.

The Old Gold started the second half more positive and Adam Armstrong’s quick turn and powerful effort, which flew just over the bar, was a sign of intent. Then, as Mosquera’s long throw wasn’t properly cleared, Andre tried to catch out David Raya at his near post, but the Spaniard was a match for it.

It then looked like Arsenal had taken the game beyond their hosts. Gabriel’s through ball sent Hincapie through, but as he lofted the ball over Sa and wheeled away to celebrate, the offside flag was raised. After review, the goal was given however, with the defender clearly onside.

Wolves, to their credit, did respond, however. Hugo Bueno’s corner was kept alive by a clever turn buy Mateus Mane, and when Santiago Bueno played the ball right to his namesake, he still had plenty to do but cut back on his left foot and whipped a stunning strike into the top corner from the edge of the box.

The Old Gold were in the game but almost weren’t again. Tchatchoua gifted Arsenal possession on the edge of his own box, but Sa saved his teammate by making himself big to deny Martinelli.

As the clocked surpassed 90, Arsenal nerves rose and Wolves sniffed their opportunity. So, when, in the fourth minute of added time, Mane whipped in a cross which both Raya and Gabriel both attacked, but as both collied, the ball fell invitingly for Edozie, whose powerful strike cannoned between Calafiori, the post, and finally off the defender before nestling into the net. A debut goal to send Molineux into raptures from the 19-year-old.

Arsenal were shellshocked and Eberechi Eze sliced wide their final chance of the contest, but the full-time whistle arrived moments later, and tempers overboiled, but Wolves are now unbeaten in three matches and left Molineux with renewed belief.
