Rodrigo Gomes insists Wolves need to take the positives out of their performance against Everton, despite falling to a third consecutive defeat to begin the Premier League season.
The Portuguese youngster scored his side’s second of the afternoon after latching onto the end of David Moller Wolfe’s cross, but it wasn’t enough to secure a result for the hosts at Molineux as defensive frailties reared their head again, as the Old Gold allowed the Toffees to score three times before Gomes’ strike.
Although he acknowledges there are plenty of areas the team need to improve over the international break before Vitor Pereira’s side are back in Premier League action, Gomes feels there are still positives to build on.
On defeat to Everton
“I think in this game, we need to take that [heart and belief] because we were fighting until the end.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t achieve the win or the draw, but we need to work.”
On cutting out mistakes
“We need to correct some things and some mistakes that we did in this game to increase our level.
“We know we can do that, but the good of this game is the spirit that we put in the game and fighting till the end. This is Wolves.”
On subs making an impact
“I think we did a good impact. I was able to score a goal, but I think in every match this season, the subs have come on and changed the game.
“In the last game, [Jorgen Strand] Larsen come from the benches for two goals. But I think this is the spirit that we need to have, if we want to come in and help the team.”
On waiting for a first Premier League win
“It was a good goal for us, but unfortunately, it’s three defeats to start the season. But we know our quality, we know that we have the capacity to win games, to fight to stay in the Premier League, and we know we have that.
“But we also need to correct some mistakes that we did, and I think if we do that, we increase our level and we are going to start winning games.”
