Pereira | 'We need to be in our best level'

Vitor Pereira is calling on his Wolves team to show consistency when they take on Everton at Molineux if they are to get their first Premier League win of the season.

The Old Gold tasted Carabao Cup success at home on Tuesday evening to fight from behind against West Ham United to claim an inaugural victory of 2025/26, as Jorgen Strand Larsen – whose future at Molineux has been under intense media scrutiny this week – came off the bench to snatch two late goals.

But Pereira insists his team will have to produce a quality performance for the entire 90 minutes if they are to overcome the Toffees.

On facing Everton at Molineux

“They’re a physical team, with a very vertical way to play, very good in set-pieces, strong in counter-attack and we need to show the mentality to compete against this team because they have a strong spirit.

“We need to be in our best level as we are facing a strong team and we know very well how they play and the identity of this team, and we need to be in our level, and to face them with the energy that I saw in the last game.

“With ambition, with the energy and the attitude that I saw in the last game if we are to win the game and try to not do mistakes against them.”

On importance of getting a home win

“This is a game that is very important for us because we are in the moment when you need to have results, because they will accept and they will not have doubts. But it’s not only about results, but about consistencies in the game.

“I want to see my team being more consistent than in the last game, trying to correct situations that we cannot suffer and concede goals like we did.”

On what Krejci will bring to Wolves

“He has qualities. He’s a technical player, he has leadership and he can play in our system in three positions, as a defender and as a midfielder, and this is important for us. He’s just done one training with us, so he still needs to learn what we want from him. In this league, a lot of games are decided with set-pieces, but it’s not only about this.

“This is a technical player with a very good decision with the ball, who can build the play. I remember last season when Toti got injured and it was a nightmare for me because in the left side, without a left foot, it is a problem.

“This is a player with leadership, with experience and he can help us. In my opinion he can help us a lot and I need players who can make up the competition inside the team. For that reason, I want to have two players fighting for every position.”

On Strand Larsen’s future

“First of all, we know that every person has ambitions in life, but in this moment, Jorgen is our player, he’s working hard because he has a good personality, he’s a team player, who in this moment is dealing with a small injury problem and I hope we can play tomorrow with him. But in the end, he’s our player, an important player for us and we cannot lose energy with things that are out of our control.

“He’s a very good player, and I know this is a situation that everybody is talking about. I believe the player can think about it, but at the end of the day he cannot control the situation. This is a moment to think about the team, think about winning the game, because it’s a very important game for us.

“He must focus on the team, to do his best, to help the club, and I am trying to focus on my team, to do my best, and at the end of the market we will see. But it’s not my decision, it’s not his decision and we must focus on what we can control. We can control our commitment, to keep our level, and this is the way.”

On having players fighting for their place

“We cannot offer the positions to the players. It’s about competition. Competing, but with good energy. Even if we bring new players, this is not the reason to offer up the position, they must compete for the position, they must compete every day, they must show – not by words but by acts – that they are in the best conditions.

“I don’t offer the positions, they must fight for the positions, they must desire the positions, they must deserve to play.

“A lot of time, the players that come from the bench, they can decide the game and what I saw in the last game, was the energy that the brought to the game in that moment, this is the character and attitude that I want to see in my team.”

On deadline day coming up on Monday

“Since the beginning, the club knows very well what we need to balance the squad, to anticipate the time of AFCON, because during AFCON we will lose players, and this is a moment we need to prevent and we need to anticipate this scenario.

“This is a moment to think about everything, and the club, they are trying. I believe we can do it until the last minute. My experience in football, I have some funny stories where in the last minute we lost the best player and in the last minute we kept the best player – but this is football.

“It’s not only about me, but about all of the managers, and I cannot wait for the window to close so I can say, ‘This is my squad. This is my team. We are here to fight and to be focused.’”
