Nuno: The impact Mourinho has had on me

Nuno Espirito Santo has spoken about the impact former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho had on him during his playing career at Porto.

Wolves’ head coach explained how the work ethic of his old manager has stuck with him, following the sacking of Mourinho from Old Trafford earlier this week.

Nuno has also had his say on the current issues surrounding fan behaviour at football matches, as well as his expectations for Wolves fans to get behind his players against Liverpool tomorrow night.

On Jose Mourinho

“I’m focused on the game of tomorrow, but of course, when you speak about Jose Mourinho, personally he has an impact on me, because I was a member of the squad of 2003, 2004 and 2005 at Porto.

“When you have someone that manages and coaches you, and you follow, believe, do everything that you can for because you believe in that idea and your leader, then that stays forever.

“That is the impact Jose Mourinho has had on me and I think on everybody that was a member of that squad. He teaches how to win.

“I haven’t spoken to him since, there’s no need, but as a former player and a friend, I wish him all the best from the bottom of my heart.”

On fan behaviour

“I think it’s becoming a problem, a problem that exists forever in football, but it’s always to do with the individual behaviours. When things happen, of course the clubs and police must take care of it and take the right measures to avoid it, but it has to do with the individuals.

“Someone who goes to watch a game should go there and support their team and not have this kind of behaviour. I truly believe that if we can change our mind sets individually, all the problems will be solved.

“There’s no other option [apart from banning them from the stadium] when someone has this kind of attitude.”

On Wolves fans

“For sure, they will be there at a packed Molineux. They offer fantastic support, always supporting the team. A noisy Molineux is what we want, and we expect.”

On managing in the Premier League

“I enjoy every day of my life, but I work a lot. I have my concerns about my things, but I enjoy it and it really gives me pleasure to work with my players.”
