Paul Lambert tonight looked back on a positive start as Wolves Head Coach as his team emerged with a point from in-form Preston.
It was a far stronger and resolute Wolves side that came through a tough 90 minutes at Deepdale, registering a first clean sheet in ten attempts against a strong home opposition.
And Lambert was able to take plenty of positives having only worked with the players for such a short period of time.
“Today is a good start for us and a great point,” he said.
“I’ve not long come in the door and some of the lads were only back with us on Thursday.
“We were strong and we were resolute, and we looked good and were a threat on the break with some pace.
“We had a great crowd behind us and I thjnk this can be a huge point.
“The performance was a lot better than it has been and that is a big plus.
“We might not win every game but if we can keep that performance level up then we will certainly be in the games.
”It was good to get the clean sheet.
“We have been working on some basics to get tighter as a unit.
“As I said before I thought the team had been too open and we needed to be stronger.
“Along with Andy at the back they were fantastic.
“There was a mistake from Kortney at the end but his general game was superb.
“He only came back on Thursday and doesn’t really know myself or Stuart but he went in and I thought all the back four were outstanding.
“Kortney tried to bring the ball down when it should have been in Row Z because he is a defender first and foremost.”
Lambert made several changes to his starting line-up, in particular restoring Jack Price to the midfielder and handing exciting 18-year-old striker Bright Enobakhare a start in the number 10 role behind Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.
“I thought it was important to put Jack back in there and I put Bright in there who is only a young kid but he did great for us,” the Head Coach explained.
“Jack is a very clever footballer who recognises danger and I felt it was important to get players in who know the league.
“I had seen Bright in the Accrington Stanley game and I had seen him in training.
“He is a really big talent even if he is only a baby in terms of his football but he gets people off their seats.
“And it’s not just Bright – there are some very good young players at this football club.
“It is one of the best groups I have seen if they can keep their feet on the ground.
“They know that if they do that and look after themselves and are professional they will get a chance.
“They will have to dislodge the players that are in there at the minute but as I have said before I am not frightened to play young kids.”
Wolves now move on to prepare for next Saturday’s home game with Sheffield Wednesday, with Lambert looking for further improvement after a solid start.
“I think the belief is there and we have a good threat going forward,” he added.
“Coming here we had to be strong against a good side who are on a terrific run and it is a big point.”
