We're looking forward to the football

Head Coach Kenny Jackett looks ahead to Saturday's behind-closed-doors friendly against Shrewsbury Town.

Wolves take to the pitch for the first time in the 2016/17 pre-season campaign as they take on Shrewsbury Town in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Compton Park.

And the gaffer revealed that now is the time for players to make an impression.

He said: "I’m looking forward to the game, looking forward to the football.

"There’ll be game time for everybody. For us to look at the competition within the squad, look at the possibilities and the young players coming through.

"We’ll be giving youngsters an opportunity over the next few weeks.

"There are several I think in the pre-season games who are going to do very well. It’s the kind of time career can be made on.

"It’s a very good opportunity at a great club for younger players."

Jackett explained that this time of year is used for building on the previous season and finding your best team.

"You’re learning all the time," said the gaffer before adding: "Even if sometimes it’s just reconfirming what was there at the end of last season.

"Working hard at really trying to get to a front two team and being able to press high.

"That’s been the theme this week of what we’re trying to do so we’ll see if we can take that on now into the games."

Wales exited Euro 2016 on Wednesday night, losing 2-0 to Portugal in the semi-final stage.

This marked the end of the competition for Dave Edwards, who will soon return to Compton Park to prepare for the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season.

But not before the midfielder has a well-earned break.

Jackett said: "Dave will have two and a half weeks off now on holiday.

"He had a groin injury but we don’t think that will be a problem. He’ll be good to go after that break.

"He’s going to come back in, check the groin out and go away for two and a half weeks.

"It’s been a long period for him. He had 10 days off at the end of the season, but it’s been quite intense being away from home.

"It’s been fantastic for him. He’ll need this break. Come Rotherham I think he’ll be available.

"Sometimes players like him do better for the rest than the consistent training.

"He’s a very fit player who does a high amount of running."
