Wolves winger Chem Campbell has agreed a season-long loan to League One side Charlton Athletic.
The 20-year-old heads to the Valley on the back of a successful first loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers during the second part of last season, when he scored three times in 12 appearances.
Campbell has spent the past seven seasons working his way through the club’s system and made history as Wolves’ second youngest ever player when he made his senior debut against Aston Villa in October 2019.
That appearance at Villa Park was Campbell’s eighth for the first-team, with the wide man playing six times last term, before the move to Adams Park in the January, where he developed his game further.
Now he’ll look to continue that improvement with the Addicks, who have won one of their opening four League One matches and take on Oxford United on Saturday afternoon.
Pathways manager Steve Davis said: “It’s another good opportunity for Chem to test himself. He was in League One with Wycombe and having a full season will give him a longer opportunity to progress. He did well in spells, scored some goals and created opportunities, and now it’s about doing that over a season.
“That’s the challenge – score more goals and make more assists, adding an end product to his game. We want him to show what he’s really capable of and be a main player, not only for Charlton, but the whole league.
“It’s a big time for him and hopefully he’s got the determination and confidence to produce on a consistent basis. At 20, he’s got to get games and show he’s up there as one of the best wingers in the league. He’s a confident boy, so he’ll back himself, and he’s looking forward to playing regularly and building some momentum.”
Charlton sit 18th in League One, but will likely aim to challenge for promotion back to the Championship this term, and Davis believes the club, system and environment are all perfect for Campbell to thrive in.
He said: “Last season with Wycombe he was around the play-offs and his ambitions was to try and get them promoted. I’m sure that won’t change with Charlton, a big club with high expectation, and he’ll want that pressure – he thrives in it. It’s a good environment for him and they’ll be hoping he can produce big things for them.
“When we’re looking to place our players, we want them to go somewhere they can challenge for a place. Chem can play across the front, both wide positions and as a ten, so his versatility will help them. He likes to come off the left, but he’s done well on the right and made his debut there, and he’s a good ten, picking up good positions.
“We had a bit of interest, some clubs who have had better starts than Charlton, but we know it’s a big club, and we want Chem to be a big part of the challenge we’re expecting them to mount.”
