Goalkeeper | Emi Martinez
The list of players to have won the World Cup and played for Wolves is extremely small; Ron Flowers and Martinez, who had a brief loan spell at Molineux from Arsenal in 2015/16 and has been named the world's best keeper twice. He was pretty average with Wolves...what did we miss?!
Defender | Ludovic Pollet
They say never fall in love with a loan player, but with gallic flair as potent as Ludo's, how could you not succumb to his French charms? The guy dripped with class, composure and technique rarely seen from Wolves centre-backs in that era. What a guy.
Forward | Guy Whittingham
Maybe not underrated at the time, but his incredible loan spell in 1994 is certainly largely forgotten. Super Guy the soldier scored eight goals in 13 games after joining from Aston Villa as he rampaged through the division’s defences. He’s apparently 61-years-old now, which makes me sad.
Midfielder | Steve Froggatt
With honourable mentions for Michael Jacobs and Denes Rosa, we probably underestimate just how good Froggatt was at his very best. Like Mark Kennedy after him, he had his flying winger moments curtailed by injury.
Manager | Bruno Lage
The wheels came off at the end after a really poor summer of recruitment but some of the football tactical specialist Lage had Wolves playing the season before (when his team were in the European spots until April) was, at its best, as good as anything I’ve seen a Wolves team produce.
Season | 1994/95
It ended with play-off heartache and Bully in tears, but what a season this was. Graham Taylor’s team scored 76, conceded 61, beat two top-flight teams in the FA Cup, won the greatest penalty shoot-out of all time against Sheffield Wednesday and, with Bull, Froggatt, John De Wolf, David Kelly, Don Goodman and Dean Richards, should have been a Premier League side.
Match | Barnsley 2-3 Wolves, 1999
An ultimately inconsequential match during a fruitless push for the play-offs under Colin Lee, but an unforgettable trip to Yorkshire with the late Dean Richards surging forward to drive home a 90th minute winner, which had looked incredibly unlikely when a Richards own goal had helped Barnsley go 2-0 up early on. We sang the Hovis music all the way home.
Shirt | 2003/04 away
I’d waited all my life for Wolves to wear a black away kit with gold trim and it finally arrived for our big top flight return in 2003/04. The Doritos logo wasn’t ideal, but otherwise it’s a fine garment, albeit one Wolves didn’t win a single match of football while wearing. Genuinely.
