Preview | Brentford vs Wolves

Wolves are looking to replicate their impressive Premier League victory over Liverpool earlier this week when the two teams meet again at Molineux in the FA Cup, and wolves.co.uk is here to preview the fifth round tie.

1 | Roll Call

Having missed Wolves’ FA Cup defeat to Liverpool last Friday evening due to suspension, Andre is back in contention for Monday’s trip to Brentford, meaning Rob Edwards is close to having a fully fit and available squad once again. The only injury concern facing the head coach this weekend is goalkeeper Jose Sa who was rested for the FA Cup game due to an ankle knock. The Portuguese stopper has been a mainstay between the sticks under Edwards and is being lined up for a return to the team on Monday evening.

Brentford are now managed by Wolves Academy graduate and former Old Gold captain Keith Andrews who will be without several of his first-team regulars as they host Wolves under the lights in west London. With Fabio Carvalho and Antoni Milambo both missing the rest of the campaign due to ACL injuries, Andrews confirmed Aaron Hicky (hamstring), Vitaly Janelt (foot) and Josh Dasilva (knee) remain sidelined, and Rico Henry has also been ruled out for Monday night after picking up a hamstring injury last week, while Reiss Nelson (calf) faces a late fitness test.

3 | Journey to Monday

Returning to Premier League action after their FA Cup campaign came to an end for another year last weekend following defeat at Molineux, Edwards’ side will be hoping to continue their top flight form which has given the club a glimmer of hope heading into the final two months of the season. Wolves are unbeaten in their last two Premier League outings, thanks to home wins over Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa and Liverpool. The Old Gold also claimed a point at Molineux against Arsenal last month, but have not been able to replicate their form on their travels as of yet and are still holding out for their first away win of the season.

Brentford also saw their FA Cup hopes dwindle last time out, after their competition came to an end on penalties to West Ham following a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes had been played. The Bees’ Premier League form sees them up in seventh in the top flight standings, although results have been mixed recently, with Andrews’ side taking four points from their previous three outings, including a draw against AFC Bournemouth, a 4-3 win over Burnley and a 2-0 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, although Brentford have a favourable run over the coming weeks and have the chance to secure European football for the first time in their history.

4 | A big win at the Gtech

During their 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Wolves produced one of their performances of the season at the Gtech Community Stadium as they put Brentford to the sword by four goals to one.

Coming just two days after Christmas, Gary O’Neil’s side followed up their Christmas Eve win over Chelsea with victory on the road in west London as Mario Lemina opened the scoring.

Hee Chan Hwang then scored twice – the first coming just 12 seconds after the restart following Lemina’s opener, as he capitalised on a mix-up in the Brentford defence before a clever touch and finish for his second made it 3-1, while Jean-Ricner Bellegarde put the result beyond doubt in the closing stages of the contest.

Wolves | Sa, Semedo (Doherty 65), S. Bueno, Kilman, Toti, Ait-Nouri (H. Bueno 81), Lemina, Gomes, Sarabia (Doyle 65), Hwang (Bellegarde 45+7), Cunha.
