Preview | Grimsby vs Wolves

Wolves are aiming to reach the last 16 of the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday when they travel to League Two outfit Grimsby Town, and wolves.co.uk is here to preview the fourth round tie.

1 | Roll Call

There will be another late fitness test for Andre ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup match after the Brazilian midfielder returned to training on Friday after an injury which has kept him out of the Premier League outings against Chelsea and Nottingham Forest. Rob Edwards continues to be without Hee Chan Hwang and Toti for the visit to Grimsby this weekend, with the pair expected to be out for the next few weeks. With a small squad at his disposal, Edwards might look to rotate where he can to keep his players as fresh as possible for the quick turnaround of Premier League leaders Arsenal to Molineux on Wednesday, which could mean senior debuts for under-21 stars Tom Edozie, Ethan Sutherland or Luke Rawlings, who were all on the bench in midweek.

David Artell has seen his squad given a boost throughout the January transfer window which has supported their run of 11 games without defeat in all competitions. With a fully fit squad to hand ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup visit of Wolves – following former Chelsea and Tottenham youngster Jude Soonsup-Bell returning from a head injury – Artell has seen the loan signings of Tyrell Sellars-Fleming, Andy Cook and Wolves Academy graduate Jackson Smith all contribute in recent weeks, while Albanian international defender Maldini Kacurri also helped the Mariners to a clean sheet on his debut in midweek.

3 | Journey to Sunday

Wolves brought their streak of Premier League defeats to an end on Wednesday evening, after earning a draw from their visit to the East Midlands when taking on Nottingham Forest. Although the hosts were well on top throughout the 90 minutes, an inspired defensive performance, as well as a lack of cutting edge by Forest, ensured the Old Gold left with a point, which could have been all three with a late chance which fell the way of Mateus Mane. Edwards’ side last victory came in the previous round of the FA Cup as Wolves turned over another League Two outfit in Shrewsbury Town 6-1 at Molineux.

Grimsby are currently on a hot streak in the league, thanks to an unbeaten run which stretches back 11 matches, with the Mariners earning eight clean sheets in that time. Sunday’s hosts were victors over Accrington Stanley on Wednesday evening, having been held to a pair of draws against MK Dons and Newport County in recent weeks. Their unbeaten run also included their last FA Cup match, in which they knocked out the third round’s lowest ranked side in Weston-super-Mare, having overcome Wealdstone and Ebbsfleet United in the earlier stages.

4 | Pushing for promotion 23 years ago

Sunday’s clash with Grimsby is the 82nd time the two teams have gone head-to-head, as well as the sixth time in the FA Cup, but Wolves haven’t travelled to Blundell Park for more than 20 years.

A year after the Mariners dented the Old Gold’s 2001/02 Division One promotion hopes with a 1-0 victory at Molineux that still holds terrible memories for anyone of a gold and black persuasion, the teams faced off in another second tier clash, but this time it was Wolves who claimed the three points, before going on to earn their long-awaited place in the Premier League.

Nathan Blake was the Wolves hero in April 2003, as the Welshman’s 13th minute strike was enough to secure a narrow victory in Lincolnshire to move the team up to fifth and give some breathing space in the race for a play-off spot.
