Scunthorpe United 2 (Parker 7, Howe 56) Wolves 2 (Gonzalez 6, 48)
Despite an encouraging performance, Wolves under-21s’ National League Cup campaign came to an end after a draw with second-placed Scunthorpe United left Rich Walker’s side fourth in Group A.
Two Enso Gonzalez strikes saw the Old Gold take the lead twice, but they were unable to secure all three points against the hosts.
A Josh Gracey save proved crucial in the resulting penalty shoot-out, as Wolves claimed the extra point despite their elimination from the competition.
The game began at pace, with neither side afraid to push forward as both looked to establish an early foothold at the Attis Arena.
It was Wolves who broke the deadlock just six minutes in, as Enzo Gonzalez’s long-range strike rewarded the Old Gold’s early pressure.
Scunthorpe wasted little time in responding, with Hugh Parker finishing from close range following a looping cross from out wide to restore parity just two minutes later.
The game showed no signs of slowing, with both sides continuing to pile on the pressure as the first half progressed.
Scunthorpe looked the more dangerous of the two sides, with Parker and Kyle Hurst both testing Josh Gracey from distance in quick succession.
Despite an energetic opening 45 minutes, neither side could find a second goal before the break, leaving the tie finely poised heading into the second half.

The second half began in much the same fashion, with both sides battling for possession in a lively opening.
Wolves regained the lead just three minutes after the restart, as Gonzalez both started and finished the move, laying it off to Dani Angel before receiving it back and slotting home.
Once again, Wolves’ advantage proved short-lived, as Declan Howe fired a lofted effort past Gracey to bring Scunthorpe level on the 56-minute mark.
Despite Rich Walker urging his players forward, it was Scunthorpe who were creating the better opportunities heading into the final quarter of an hour, with both teams still searching for a winner.
Following a cagey end to the game, the sides could not be separated, seeing the points shared and the tie enter a penalty shoot-out to decide the extra point.
Gonzalez, Minkyu Ji, Emilio Ballard-Matthews, Wes Okoduwa and Sebastian Lochhead all converted from the spot, while Gracey made a key save, seeing Wolves victorious in the shoot-out.
Despite claiming the extra shoot-out point, Wolves’ fourth-placed finish in Group A brought saw them narrowly miss out on progressing to the next stage of the National League Cup competition.
