Wolves Women forward Mel Filis reflected on the Old Gold’s 2-1 victory over Bristol City in the Subway Players Cup.
Wolves' number 10 scored the winning goal with less than ten minutes to play, following up Yana Daniëls’ strike, either side of a Robins equaliser.
Filis provided her thoughts on the performance, her goal and how the team responded following a defeat at the hands of their opponents last week.
On the performance
“I’m very proud of the team. I think it's been a tough week, obviously [with a] midweek game thrown in there as well.
“I think it’s really positive that we managed to rotate the squad. Everyone got minutes this week, which is brilliant, and I think ultimately it was about going into next week with a good feeling around the group, and I think we produced what we are capable of today, so I’m proud of everyone.”
On the response from the 4-2 defeat to Bristol City
“Analysis after that game was about where we can tighten things up. We’re lucky today that we've been able to play them again. It shows that when we go back and we work hard on the training pitch, we can produce performances like this.
“So credit to the staff and players really.”
On her goal
“Macca [Dan McNamara] tries to encourage me to shoot on sight and shoot in and around the goal where I can.
“Sometimes I'm looking for a pass rather than a shot, but I think today is an example of when I can just get my shots off in and around the goal; even if there are bodies in front, there's a chance it's going to go in.”
On the impact of the substitutions
“I think it was evident.
“I think we came on with energy. We always try and do that, and I think the positive thing was going in at half-time and still being in the game. We knew that second half we could come out and turn things in our favour.
“So I'm just really proud that we finished well.”
On the next game versus Nottingham Forest
“I know it's going to be a tough game; every game in this league is. I think we'll be ready for it.
“We'll get back onto the training pitch and have a good week of training to come up with our plan and go out and execute it, and I think we'll get points from the game.
