Fer Lopez believes Sunday’s performance showed the Wolves players knew how important the Black Country derby is to supporters.
The Spaniard was the match winner against West Bromwich Albion, capitalising on a defensive mistake from the visitors and clipping home the only goal to ensure the bragging rights remained at Molineux.
The win leaves the squad in a strong spot going into the international break, three points off top spot with a game in hand, but on Sunday it was about the derby, and Lopez was proud of the performance which led to the desired result.
On being the match winner
“It feels very good. I’m very proud, especially from the way we performed. I think first half was the best first half we’ve played all season, very intense, winning our duels. We didn’t score, but knew if we played like that second half we would win.
“The English lads had told us about the importance, but we also have derbies in Spain and where the lads come from. They told us it was an important derby especially because it’s not played every year. I’m very happy for the lads, they deserve it, not only me scoring the goal, but everyone who contributed to the win.”
On scoring from a press
“It was very satisfying because since pre-season we weren’t getting the press right, but we made quite a few changes. It was hard because with so many games we didn’t have time to train a lot, it was more games and recovering. We could work a bit more on that so we could get it right today. I knew if I did a little dink it would go over because the keeper would rush. I nearly squared it to Arma, but I knew a little dink would do it.”

On a lively Molineux
“It was crazy. When I scored I couldn’t hear anything, it was great. We look forward to playing more at home. Since the beginning we’ve only played three. If we win the game in hand we go top of the table, so we are in a good spot right now.”
On going into the break with a win
“If we win the game in hand we’d go top and that was the goal since the beginning. We need to keep going like this. We have a strong squad, which is good with the amount of games. When I came off Tommy went in, JJ came on, Bellegarde came on, top players. The squad we have is great and we need to keep playing like this and we’ll do good.”
