Adam Armstrong insists the Wolves players have been doing everything they possibly can this summer to put the team in the best position to attack the Championship this season.
The striker is well-versed in the second tier having scored more than 80 goals in the division across his career so far and knows just what it will take for the Old Gold to bounce straight back to the Premier League.
Armstrong has already got off the mark for 2026/27, scoring the first goal of the Cesar Peixoto era against Port Vale to earn Wolves a place in the Carabao Cup second round, and with former club Blackburn Rovers next up at Molineux, he’s hoping to continue his scoring form on Friday evening.
On a winning start to the season
“It was just what we needed. We had a good pre-season, getting to know the new manager and how he wants to play, and I thought the boys were excellent. We got the goals and controlled the game, so it’s a great start. It’s nice to get a goal and be through to the next round.
“We owe a lot to the fans this year to give our all and get this club back to the Premier League, which is where everyone wants to be.
“You can only start by winning your first game, I know it’s in the cup, but we have to take the positives and the negatives and move forward to Blackburn.”
On knowing the game plan
“We have to just keep on working hard every day to try and get the most out of each other and the most out of what the manager wants from us – that’s the main thing.
“It’s still early days, but it’s been positive. The lads have worked their socks off to get where they are now and we have to kick on.
“We know how tough the Championship’s going to be this year and it’s good to start with a win.”
On looking ahead to the Championship
“It’s going to be a tough league, there’s a lot of strong sides this year that are all going to be pushing for promotion, and with the extra play-off places it’s going to be even tougher. I’ve told the lads who haven’t played here how tough it’s going to be and we’re going to need every person.
“We want to win every game and put pressure on ourselves to do that. We’ll take each game as it comes, there’ll be different challenges along the way.
“We have to stick together through the wins and the losses and try to go on a positive run to get back to the Premier League.”

On scoring goals in the second tier
“You get a lot more chances. The Premier League is the best league in the world, but this year’s going to be very tough because we’ve got very strong teams in the Championship.
“It’s getting better every year and it’s going to be more competitive than what it usually is, but hopefully I’ll score a few goals.”
On facing his former club
“Blackburn helped kick on my career. I signed there as a 21-year-old for Tony Mowbray who is now back there. He gave me that massive opportunity to play in the Championship, gave me the minutes and the confidence to get back to the Premier League with Southampton, and I can’t thank Tony and the club enough for that.
“It’s an amazing club, I had some incredible memories there, and I’m looking forward to playing them on Friday.
“I’ll have a chat with him before the game, he’s helped me get where I am today, so it’ll be nice to see him but hopefully I’ll score a few against his team.”
