Mane | 'It was a great opportunity for him'

Mateus Mane revealed he offered words of wisdom to Jerome Abbey after the 16-year-old came off the bench in the final Premier League game of the season to make his senior Wolves debut.

Although only a year on from making his own debut in the top flight, Mane is now a key player for the Old Gold, and produced another impressive display against Burnley, where the forward struck the post and came close on several other occasions to turning the point the team had to settle for at Turf Moor into three.

But with the knowledge of what it takes to make the step up from Academy prospect into first-team debutant, Mane was also on hand at the weekend to help guide Abbey during his first game when the young midfielder came on with 15 minutes of the season remaining to become Wolves’ youngest ever Premier League player and second youngest in all competitions throughout the club’s history.

On ending the season with a draw

“Before the game we went into it wanting to win, of course, we wanted to win, but it was a tough day, a hot day, as well, so I feel like we battled and we fought.

“But in the second half, we started a bit slow, and during the game, it turned into a game of basketball, with the ball going back and forth, but I felt like we tried our best and we gave our all.”

On taking the lead early

“I put a good ball in, Krejci headed it, and feel like it hit off his hand, so we appealed to the referee, we were getting on to him, so he went to the screen, gave us a pen, and Arma scored, so it was good.”

On Armstrong’s penalty

“We’re practicing them every day in training, and I feel like that’s his job as a striker, a top striker. We knew it was going in the back of the net and we just went off to celebrate with him.”

On Abbey’s senior debut

“It was a great opportunity for him. I told him before the game to be ready because you never know what could happen.

“The manager could trust you and put you on, and he did that. But I felt that when he came on, he did very well, so well done to him.”
