Saiss: I’m lucky to score every Boxing Day

Romain Saiss is happy to have continued his Boxing Day tradition of scoring for Wolves as his second half effort claimed a point for his side at Fulham.

The midfielder tapped in from a yard out in the 85th minute of the festive fixture to steal a point for Wolves out of the grasp of the Cottagers.

But the Moroccan felt it was nothing but what his team deserved after dominating possession in the second half of the Premier League encounter.

On the draw at Craven Cottage

“We deserved this point, maybe we deserved more because we controlled the game, especially in the second half. If we lost this game, it would have been unfair, but we can do better.

“We tried to keep the ball high and after that, tried to keep good possession in the other half of the pitch to find solutions. I think we lost a lot of the ball in the first half and we were not patient, but we were different in the second half.

“We were more patient. The coach asked for that in the second half and we controlled more of the game, but we need to be more clinical in the last 30 metres of the pitch to find more solutions to score.”

On Fulham’s resilience

“We did a lot of crossing, but it is hard with teams who are around the box or fill in the box. It’s very hard because we don’t have space in the deep – 11 players are in front of us – so it’s difficult to find the solutions.

“We knew they are good on the counter-attack and were waiting for that, so we had to take care about it because we saw it was the way they were dangerous.

“But it is a good point and we will keep going.”

On Boxing Day goals

“I’m lucky to score every Boxing Day, so if we can play every Boxing Day – I’m going to say in my head that it’s the 26th December every time I play so I can score more goals.

“The goal against Milwall [last Boxing Day] was better than this one, but it’s a goal and I’m very happy because it’s my first goal on the Premier League and I’m going to try and score more goals.

“It’s good, especially for the team, because I think we deserved this point. But now we have to recover because we’ve got another big game on Saturday.”

On scoring aims against Tottenham

“I’m going to try. I missed two chances against Liverpool and I think I could be better, but most important is the team.

“I prefer a striker like Raul [Jimenez], Helder [Costa], Ivan [Cavaleiro], Adama [Traore] if they can score, because it’s more important for them than me. But it’s a good game in a very good stadium and we have to recover well to be ready.”
