Wolves under-21s suffered a 4-0 defeat to a strong Manchester City side in the opening game of the Premier League 2 season at the Joie Stadium.
Goals from Kylan Midwood, Tyrone Samba, Floyd Samba and Xavier Parker secured victory for the Citizens, as Wolves’ first game of the PL2 campaign ended in defeat.
Manchester City started the quicker of the two sides, as striker Midwood gave the hosts the lead five minutes in, pouncing on a loose ball following strong work from Christian Dunbar-McDonald on the wing.
Floyd Samba almost inspired a City second in the 10th minute, however Alfie Arnold stood strong, making a fine intervention with his feet before the ball was cleared safely.
However, Wolves came close to an equaliser minutes later, with Dani Ángel finding space and striking low, his shot parried by French shot-stopper Max-Edgar Chabot.
Man City’s relentless pressure soon earned them their second, as Tyrone Samba reclaimed possession before firing a long-range effort into the bottom corner to help regain control for the hosts.
The Old Gold stayed in contention despite City’s dominance, as Myles Dayman and Luke Rawlings showed their intent with ambitious attempts on goal around the half-hour mark, although neither troubled the home side.
Five minutes before the break, Oliver Reiß’ side would add their third as Tyrone Samba’s quick feet earned a penalty, which was finished with class by brother Floyd.

City would continue their first-half dominance into the second period as Tyrone Samba used a fortunate ricochet to his advantage before setting up Parker, who poked home a fourth in the 54th minute.
On the hour mark, Old Gold goalkeeper Arnold was called into action, as a fumbled corner fell into the path of in-form Tyrone Samba, whose powerful effort was held well by the 17-year-old.
While Man City remained in control of the game, the next 15 minutes of action were scrappy, with both sides struggling to create any meaningful chances.
After several changes, Wolves began to threaten on the break as Dayman and substitute Finn Ashworth combined well before Ángel’s long-range shot was thwarted by Leke Drake who stood firm with 20 minutes to go.
Dunbar-McDonald continued to threaten Wolves’ left-hand side as his direct run created space for a shot in the 83rd minute, however his effort was failed to test Arnold.
The winger came close again twice minutes later after driving at the visitors’ defence, but late interventions from Minkyu Ji and Seb Lochhead kept the score at 4-0.
Wolves will now look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League Cup as they face Preston North End on 2nd September.
